This was the sports carnival where each class had to perform their own dance to the principal.
Soon after we had to prepare our English Camp. Little did we know we would actually be joining a Scout's camp at another town. Overall it was a good experience however, my team came last in everything. I sucked as a leader...
The next major event was the Dong Guang Christmas service where we were all part of a skit which we didn't really understand (as half of it was in Mandarin and half of it was in Taiwanese). THe only real role in that skit I had was to dance with old ladies and act scared.
This was one of the primary school acts.
Teaching English was interesting to say the least. We had to prepare many last minute lessons for the final week. I guess doing TESOL wasn't a bad idea at all! The kids really enjoyed our lessons and we also enjoyed teaching them as well. They'd treat us like celebrities and ask us to sign an autograph after the lesson.
Here's a pic of Ping teaching:
The aftermath:
Most of kids didn't have English names. However, some of the boys did have names, named after their favourite sport stars. These names included: Bryant (Kobe Bryant), TMAC, Michael Jordan. Some other peculiar names included: Pig, Flower X 2 ?!. With the kids with no names, I would christen them. Christina, Juan-Carlos, Penelope, May.
Juan Carlos is the small boy at the front:
Evangelistic night was next. We managed to feed 40 people with around $30 AUD. It was a good night where Mikey Tai did a great job in preaching the gospel. We sang songs, shared testimonies but most of all showed some love to these disadvantaged kids.
It takes 5
Dinner! (great job Kwok)
After the event, we decided to suss out the night markets which happen every Tuesday night. The markets are fairly small but considering the size of the town, it is a major thing. The markets are mainly filled with food stores and ekka-type games.
The gang with a few of the kids!
What an unpleasant surprise: I lost to this girl in this basketball game. I'm actually quite ashamed. She was actually kind enough to give me the prize that she won :).
Next day: Early morning class.
Who hit my head?!
Look how close that girl's head is on Michael's shoulder haha
We also taught them some games from Australia like Red rover. By the end of this game, I think three girls were crying due to injuries.
Heel and Toe Heel and Toe Slide Slide Slide Slide
Next we head to Pu Li church to host our 3rd and final English camp. These kids were a lot older and were very welcoming. Their musical talent never ceases to amaze me.
That same night we had a surprise birthday for Jasmine, one of the ladies who have dedicated their lives to serve at the church. It was also supposedly the coldest night of the year therefore we had to eat hotpot and eat gluttonous balls filled with sesame paste.
This was the naughty baby who kept following me around
Haha you crazy kids, you stole my camera!
Hey this guy looks like Ezekiel, don't you think?
I miss these kids
Playing with fireworks.. actually playing with Illegal fireworks is even more fun. Thank God that no one got hurt otherwise we would've got into very big trouble haha.
Emma and I
Climbing mountains is not fun especially where it is a mountain where you need to go down to get back up and vice versa. I don't even know how I survived!
The face of exhaustion:
But hey! we made it in the end.
These were the children who visited the church twice a week. They are all so cute! Miss you all!
The lady on the left is Teacher Shuping, I'm so thankful she could speak Cantonese!.
The day we dreaded. Even though it was Christmas, we had to say goodbye to the kids at the junior high.
The teacher's officially saying goodbye to us.
Scout group reunion. Why do I always look like a random in each photo?
Too many presents from kids... I can't even shut my suitcase!
I miss this place.. I hope I will have the opportunity to go back. I will be praying for you guys.
Thank you for a wonderful summer.
God bless all of you
